about

Solo guitar interpretations of Irish melodies

When everything suddenly changed in March, 2020 I was in Ireland expecting to start a tour. Instead, we went to record in an old lodge in rural County Westmeath. I returned late that month to a shuttered Brooklyn and, sequestered at home with the lingering feelings and impressions from my time in the muted countryside, began recording some of the Irish tunes I had been playing. I never intended to make a solo guitar record, let alone one of Irish music, but the pandemic had us doing all kinds of new and unexpected things.

Much gratitude to the musicians that got me started playing traditional Irish music: Cady Finlayson, Caitlin Warbelow, Dan Lowery, Alan Murray, Jason Cade, John Morrow, and Dana Lyn. And to those I continue to learn from through conversations, sessions, and sharing stages— especially Ivan Goff, Cillian Vallely, Owen Marshall, Seamus Egan, and Martin Hayes.
Thanks also to Matt Kanelos, David Reinfeld, Lily Holgate, and my family.

For Tony Sanna.

"The city sleeps and the country sleeps,
The living sleep for their time . . . . the dead sleep for their time,
The old husband sleeps by his wife and the young husband sleeps by his wife;
And these one and all tend inward to me, and I tend outward to them,
And such as it is to be of these more or less I am."

- Walt Whitman, from "Song of Myself" (1855)
